- W206019019 abstract "Following an invitation from the Director of the City Art Centre, Edinburgh, Brettle’s photographic celebration of twenty-eight women, became one of three visual arts shows featured in the Edinburgh International Festival of 2003. The exhibition was accompanied by a catalogue (distributed by Dawson Books) containing essays by Sheena McDonald (broadcaster and journalist) and Dr Joanna Woodhall (Deputy Director of the Courtauld Institute) as well as interviews with six of the subjects by Moira Jeffrey (journalist and art critic for The Glasgow Herald). The subjects included Professor McLean (International Bar Association Professor of Law and Ethics in Medicine); Professor Mansfield (Professor of Vascular Surgery, Imperial College at St Mary’s Hospital, London) and Sinha (Architect, Director: Eco=Logic Design and Research Consultancy, Chair; the equality unit of RIBA). Brettle was interviewed about airside on Woman’s Hour, BBC Radio 4 (22nd August 2003): http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/2003_33_fri_02.shtml Whilst working on this output, Brettle began to rethink the professional dimension of photographic portraiture and its complicity in our perception of social status and renown. As a result, this project launched her on the extended engagement with questions of photographic identity (output 1 and 2). As a result of the airside project, Brettle was invited by the trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland and James Holloway (Director of Scottish National Portrait Gallery) to develop a further project: ‘Force: A Contemporary portrait of Scotland’s Police’ for an exhibition at SNPG (May–July 2007) and Duff House, Banff (September-October 2007). A NGS publication celebrates this project with essays by Louise Jackson (Lecturer in Economic & Social History, School of History and Classics, University of Edinburgh) and Amanda Hopkinson (Director of the British Centre for Literary Translation, School of Literature and Creative Writing, University of East Anglia). Brettle was interviewed about ‘Force’ on BBC Radio Scotland Arts Cafe. Review: http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/critique.cfm?id=695202007." @default.
