- W2060250383 abstract "Abstract It is now widely accepted that sperm structure can be used to resolve problems of phylogenetic relationship. In the present study we consider one component of the spermatozoon only, namely the flagellar axoneme, and we restrict the study to insects, in particular to Diptera and Trichoptera. In material fixed with glutaraldehyde plus tannic acid and followed by uranyl acetate rather than osmium tetroxide, it was possible to see the individual protofilaments in microtubular doublets and singlets and in the so called accessory tubules. The latter have 16 protofilaments in most insect orders, but this number was found in one dipteran family only, namely Mycetophilidae. Other members of this family lack accessory tubules as do the primitive members of some other insect orders. For either of these reasons Mycetophylidae is regarded as the most primitive family within Diptera. The higher dipteran suborder, Brachycera, shares with Tipulidae a 13 protofilament pattern. Just as there is a much greater axonemal diversity in Nematocera as compared to Brachycera, there is a greater axonemal diversity in Annulipalpia as compared to Integripalpia among Trichoptera. Spermatozoa in Annulipalpia are immotile and lack dynein arms, whereas those in Integripalpia have inner dynein arms and accessory tubules with 17–20 protofilaments and are regarded by us to be macrotubules." @default.
