- W2060264906 abstract "The question of whether human papillomaviruses (HPVs) intervene exclusively in genital organ carcinogenesis remains controversial. However evidence is accumulating that both other viruses (e.g. herpes) and extraviral factors play a significant role in increasing the risk of invasive and intraepithelial neoplasias and flat condylomas. Smoking is regarded as an extremely important co-factor through the mechanism of either direct mutagenesis by vaginal mucus or smoking-induced immune disorders. Oral hormonal contraception seems to be the 2nd most significant co-factor. At present it is unclear whether only estrogen and progesterone are involved in this effect. The observation of the HPV virus sequence in the cell genome after administration of a luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone agonist to suppress females steroid hormones in gynecological surgery patients suggests however that it is the estrogen component that is the co-factor in genital papilloma oncogenesis." @default.
