- W2060397740 abstract "Coronary artery disease (CAD) and its associated complications, particularly ischemic left ventricular dysfunction, represent substantial barriers to long-term survival for many patients and a significant functional burden to today’s cost-conscious society. In light of this, various modalities are now in development and being tested clinically to treat or reverse this form of myocardial injury (Figure 1). Restoring blood flow is the most effective means to limit damage to ischemic tissue. Surgical placement of bypass grafts for CAD was introduced in the 1960s, whereas non-surgical re-vascularization was introduced clinically starting in the 1970s. Angioplasty combined with stent placement is currently the most frequently applied non-surgical method of relieving acute coronary ischemia. Advances in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), percutaneous coronary angioplasty with stents and aggressive medical therapy with angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE)-I, β-blockers and statins are now standard therapies for this disease. However, despite recent advances in these modalities, a significant number of patients with diffuse CAD and left ventricular (LV) dysfunction cannot be managed adequately by any of these therapies. 1 Atwood J.E.
