- W2060497960 abstract "Abstract Twenty eight male lambs were utilized in a 2×2 factorial study of the effects of cranial cervical ganglionectomy (GX) and castration on longitudinal hormone profiles and growth, between the 7th and 37th weeks of age. Plasma LH levels in entire lambs usually were very low throughout the experiment, however, non-GX entires did display a small increase in concentrations between 8 and 13 weeks of age which was not evident in GX entires. At all ages plasma LH levels were elevated significantly in castrated animals. Neither GX nor its interaction with castration had any significant effect on LH levels. In entire lambs plasma testosterone concentrations increased from nearly undetectable levels at 7 weeks to highest values between 31 and 37 weeks of age. Overall GX reduced testosterone secretion and also disrupted the normal photoperiod-induced seasonal pattern of high prolactin levels in summer and low during winter. Castration had no significant effect on prolactin levels and neither did the interaction of GX and castration. GX significantly reduced bodyweights, particularly when applied to castrates. An incidental observation indicated that plasma prolactin levels were drastically, but only temporarily, reduced in 20 lambs subjected to mid-summer shearing. No such effect was noted for 8 animals which were not available for shearing at that time. It was concluded that the pineal gland has an important influence in modulating the secretion of prolactin, and probably also affects body growth and the secretion of LH and testosterone. Through those effects it may contribute to regulation of pubertal development in ram lambs." @default.
