- W2060674796 abstract "We read with interest the recent genome-wide association study by Li and colleagues 1 Li Y Sheu CC Ye Y et al. Genetic variants and risk of lung cancer in never smokers: a genome-wide association study. Lancet Oncol. 2010; 11: 321-330 Summary Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (195) Google Scholar and the identification of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the glypican 5 (GPC5) gene associated with susceptibility to lung cancer in non-smokers. These variants were elegantly linked to the expression of GPC5, and this gene was also shown to be expressed at lower levels in lung cancer than in healthy lung tissue. The authors point out that different SNPs in GPC5 have also been implicated in susceptibility to multiple sclerosis (MS). 2 Baranzini SE Wang J Gibson RA et al. Genome-wide association analysis of susceptibility and clinical phenotype in multiple sclerosis. Hum Mol Genet. 2009; 18: 767-778 Crossref PubMed Scopus (366) Google Scholar Intriguingly, a recent meta-analysis of cancer risk in MS has shown that the risk of all cancers (including lung cancer) is significantly decreased in individuals with MS (odds ratio for all cancers 0·92, 95% CI 0·87–0·97). 3 Handel AE Ramagopalan SV Multiple sclerosis and risk of cancer: a meta-analysis. J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry. 2010; (in press.) Cancer risk among patients with multiple sclerosis: a population-based register study.
