- W2060804925 abstract "Male and female subjects were paired with male or female partners with whom they had just become acquainted and were asked to write self-descriptions of themselves for their partners. Masculinity, feminity (measured by the BSRI), and the interaction between masculinity and feminity (M × F) were used in a stepwise multiple regression to predict disclosure intimacy, word count, and subjects' ratings. Sex-role orientation was influential only for male subjects. For males paired with males, femininity was positively related to intimacy and length of the self-disclosure and the expected intimacy of the partner's disclosure. Masculinity was negatively related to intimacy of disclosure of males to male partners. Femininity was also positively related to males' ratings of expected disclosure intimacy for female partners. Androgyny, assessed using the M × F interaction, was unrelated to self-disclosure for all pairs. However, sex-typed or cross-sex-typed males expected more intimate disclosures from male partners. These data provide a test of the impact of sex-role orientation on a behavioral measure of self-disclosure and contradict previous studies using self-report measures of self-disclosure which find a positive relationship between masculinity and intimacy of disclosure." @default.
