- W2060841904 abstract "I read with interest the recent Letter to the Editor by Wallace and colleagues1 on the error due to shear deformation when calculating mechanical properties from three-point bending tests. A recent article by Kourtis and colleagues2 examined the multiple sources of error in three-point bending tests. The purpose of this letter is to point out that although it is possible to correct for the error due to shear deformation by using an advanced theory for beam bending that includes shear deformation (such as the theory first proposed by Timoshenko3), the correction for shear may only eliminate a minority of the error that exists when testing small bones, with short spans, such as mouse bones. For example, Kourtis and colleagues2 show that for a mouse femur, approximately two-thirds of the total error inherent in the use of the standard beam bending equation is caused by local deformations (indentation and ovalization) near the outer support points and the central loading ram, and not by shear deformation. Thus, the use of the Timoshenko advanced beam bending equation can still result in a large residual error in estimating material properties, such as the elastic modulus. Using finite element models, Kourtis and colleagues2 generated charts which allow one to correct for the primary sources of error when performing three-point bending tests, given the caveat that those charts are based on the idealization that the beam is prismatic and has a circular cross-section. As noted by Wallace and colleagues,1 a more accurate approach would involve the creation of full, three-dimensional models from CT data and the use of heterogeneous material properties from the CT attenuation values. That approach, however, is often not feasible given the resources and expertise required. If those resources are not available, then the charts in Kourtis and colleagues2 can give a good sense of the magnitude of the error inherent in the use of the standard, three-point beam bending equation." @default.
