- W2060843172 abstract "Changes in medical practice are encouraging physicians and others involved in pain medicine to better understand and attempt to manage the relationships of cost, value, quality, and appropriateness of care provided to patients with pain. It is important for us to understand the societal dynamic energizing these changes, if we are to have available the resources necessary to provide pain care to these patients. Pain medicine is especially vulnerable to quality-related misunderstandings, since pain is difficult to quantify and, for many physicians and laypersons, poorly and incompletely understood. The author believes the most practical way of communicating this needed information is to use existing accreditation bodies to assist in communicating information about pain medicine. The focus article will briefly outline some broad concepts about the history of quality monitoring, the development of accrediting bodies, the evaluation of pain medicine quality programs, and, finally, hints on incorporating these concepts into practice." @default.
