- W2060944452 abstract "It has recently been reported that cancer, arteriosclerosis and coronary heart diseases have long been considered major contributors to morbidity and mortality in developed countries, such as Western Europe, United States of America and Japan. Although a number of medicinal plants and foodstuffs are used for their preventive effects against life-style-related diseases, such as coronary heart diseases, hypertension, thrombosis, allergic inflammation, arteriosclerosis, diabetes and cancer, the basis for clinical studies and experimental evidence are insufficient and unclear. Therefore, to clarify whether natural products have preventive effects on tumors, tumor metastasis, allergic inflammation and coronary artery constriction, I used biochemical and pharmacological approaches to study the natural products isolated from various medicinal plants and foodstuffs. In the present review, I have introduced the biological and pharmacological actions of various components, isolated from some medicinal plants and foodstuffs, on tumors and tumor metastasis in tumor-bearing mice, and on adhesion molecule expression and artery constriction in vascular endothelium. Fucoidan (polysaccharides), carp oil (fatty acids) and triterpenoids inhibited the tumor growth and/or metastasis in the liver, through the inhibition of tumor-induced neovascularization, in tumor-bearing mice. Baicalein (flavones) isolated from Scutellaria baicalensis roots inhibited the thrombin-induced adhesion molecule through the inhibition of protein C kinase activation. Furthermore, xanthoangelol (chalcones) isolated from Angelica keiskei roots inhibited catecholamine-induced vasoconstriction through endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production." @default.
