- W2060987289 abstract "Thyroid uptake and urinary excretion of I131 and water balance studies have been performed upon albino rats with full-thickness burns at four different post-burn time intervals. Rats of the same age and genetic strain were used as controls. The thyroid I131 uptakes of the burned rats were not significantly different from uptake values for unburncd controls except on the 3rd postburn day (PBD) when the I131 uptake for the burned animals was significantly lower than that for the controls. Except for the immediate post-burn period (3rd PBD) the burned animals excreted less urine and I131 during the uptake periods than did the control animals. It is concluded that the burned rat is capable of increased oxygen consumption, ergo heat production, with normal or subnormal levels of thyroid activity." @default.
