- W2061007042 abstract "Abstract Fifty-four cases of malignant melanoma of the mouth reported in the literature are analyzed. The neoplasm occurred in males more commonly than in females. In the majority of cases (68 per cent) the patient was over 40 years of age. The youngest was a baby of 2 months and the oldest a woman of 84. Most of the cases occurred in Caucasians. Only six in the colored races were reported. The complicated embryologie development of the maxilla, which is formed partly from ectoderm and partly from endoderm with inclusion of cells in the mucosa capable of forming melanin, has been advanced as the reason for the extraordinary predilection of the neoplasm for the maxilla (93 per cent of cases of melanoma of the mouth). Not infrequently the neoplasm developed from a pigmented area which had been present on the palate for many years. The most common sign is the presence of a rapidly growing “blackberry tumor” in the mouth. Hemorrhage, pain, loosening of the teeth, cervical metastases, dysphagia, dyspnea, interference with phonation and trismus may occur. If doubt exists as to the diagnosis, a frozen section may be made with the intention of performing a radical operation if a malignant melanoma is present. The treatment of choice is surgery. Wide removal of the primary growth by electrocautery may be performed, followed by block dissection of the cervical lymph glands into which the area involved drains. The possible presence of pulmonary or visceral metastases should be considered before surgical treatment is attempted." @default.
