- W2061036338 abstract "It has been long suspected that surgery and anaesthesia may render an individual prone to infection in the perioperative period. Although a wide variety of factors may contribute towards the pathogenesis of perioperative infection, in the final analysis it is a depression of the immune response that allows an invading organism to become established. Therefore, it is important to assess the influence of different anaesthetic agents on various aspects of the immune response. A clearer understanding of anaesthesia-induced suppression of the immune response should facilitate a further decrease in morbidity and mortality from perioperative infection, tumour growth and dispersal of malignant cells." @default.
