- W2061053018 abstract "Allergies to antiseizure medications present with a variety of manifestations. Most common are simple, uncomplicated exanthematous rashes. Anticonvulsant hypersensitivity syndrome (AHS) is a delayed reaction to an antiseizure medication characterized by fever, skin rash ranging from mild morbilliform eruptions to toxic epidermal necrosis, lymphadenopathy, and other organ involvement.1Certain medications, particularly phenytoin, have been associated with a positive antinuclear antibody (ANA) and symptoms of connective tissue disease, a condition termed drug-induced lupus (DIL).2 Patients who develop DIL as a reaction to one antiseizure medication are at a higher risk of developing DIL as a reaction to other, chemically unrelated, antiseizure medications.3We retrospectively reviewed the records of 1,830 consecutive patients evaluated in the Strong Epilepsy Center between 1990 and 1997. Twenty-three patients were identified with documented allergies (rashes) to more than one antiseizure medication.
