- W2061224818 abstract "Summary Lasers are being used increasingly in medicine and surgery. Catastrophic airway fires may occur during surgery when the laser is used by personnel who have received insufficient training. The laser provides a high-energy density that can be precisely aimed. The special characteristics of the types of lasers used in medicine have led to their specific medical applications. The operating room hazards posed by medical lasers necessitate the use of protective measures such as eye protection for the patient and operating room personnel. The anesthetic management of patients presenting for laser surgery includes preoperative evaluation, premedication, and induction and maintenance of anesthesia. If the operative site is near the airway, special anesthetic maneuvers such as the avoidance of nitrous oxide are necessary. Each member of the operating room team must be familiar with a plan for management of an airway fire. Specialized airway management techniques such as venturi jet ventilation or the use of endotracheal tubes designed for laser surgery can facilitate these cases." @default.
