- W2061273862 abstract "In large colonies of guinea pigs, long-lasting stable social structures are found, in which the individuals take different social positions. Established social relationships result in predictable behaviour and provide all members of the social system with high security. Under such stable conditions even a high population density does not lead to physiological stress responses, such as increased plasma glucocorticoid titres, and males of high and low social status show similar adrenocortical and sympathetic-adrenomedullary activities. When two adult males which have grown up in different colonies are confronted in the presence of an unfamiliar female, they quickly build up stable dominance relations and no changes in plasma glucocorticoid, catecholamine and testosterone titres are found, in winners or in losers. In contrast, when two males, each raised with a female only, are confronted in the presence of an unfamiliar female, high levels of aggressive behaviour are displayed and no stable dominance relations are established. At the same time, extreme increases in adrenocortical and adrenomedullary activities are found. When the opponents are not separated after 2 days, irreversible pathophysiological changes occur. These data suggest that guinea pigs require considerable socialisation to acquire the skills necessary to build up stable social structures. If rearing conditions are inadequate this creates conditions of social instability and extreme endocrine changes occur.
