- W2061815071 abstract "Abstract Reports of prevalence of vitamin A deficiency by clinical surveys in the schoolage population of Gujarat is very high. The present study used 8 criteria as under: I. Prevalence of XN; II. Prevalence of XIB; III. Prevalence of X2/X3A/X3B; IV. Prevalence of XS; V. Prevalence of active cases (XN+any conjunctival signs ); VI. Plasma vitamin A levels less than 10 mcg/dl; VII. Disappearance of XN on mega vitamin A dosing; VIII. Disappearance of XIB on dosing with vitamin A. Criteria I, II, III, IV and VI are those proposed by WHO for the preschoolers (1–6 years). The prevalence figures for vitamin A deficiency in a large schoolage population of 1922 boys and girls was: criterion I-16%; criterion II-9%; criterion III-Nil; criterion IV-Nil, and criterion V-10%. As overall prevalence was higher in boys vs girls (44% vs 37%), criteria VI, VII and VIII were applied to a representative sub-sample of 183 boys. The prevalence figures were: criterion VI-8%; criterion VII-12%; criterion VIII-9%. By any criteria used there was a close correspondence in the range of 8–16%, theraby establishing that it was a valid one for the population. Results were further substantiated by mean dietary retinol intakes of only 17–47% of the ICMR-RDA. The study demonstrated the need to use multi-criteria to assess the true prevalence of vitamin A deficiency in the school-age population; the most reliable set were V, VI, VII and VIII. It further established that vitamin A deficiency was a public health problem in underprivileged: schoolers of this region." @default.
