- W2061915253 abstract "Over the past several decades, researchers in many areas in the field of early experience have changed their conclusion regarding the developmental effects of sensory stimulation. Infants are no longer viewed as passive recipients of stimulation but as active organizers, not only reacting to but also altering their environments. Researchers from the fields of maternal deprivation, environmental enrichment and specific sensory stimulation concur that environmental stimulation can effect changes in developing (and in mature) organisms. The degree of change depends upon the subjects (or clients) interaction with the stimulation. These revised conclusions bring new research approaches that acknowledge transactions between infants, clients, or research subjects and their environments. While reductionistic strategies are still necessary for isolating specific variables, ecological and transactional models are increasingly used for interpreting the effects of experimental or clinical change.
