- W2061929523 abstract "Species and other taxa below the species level are constantly changing. The environment is responsible for most of their variation. Intraspecific forms may appear and disappear within a few generations and even those that became more or less isolated as species are never permanent. In spite of that, species extinction is rarely viewed as opposite to species formation. Conversely, species extinction caused by human activities is hardly ever related to the possible acceleration of new form creation by similar causes. We must keep in mind that the maintenance of biodiversity is not a static phenomenon but a process in which creative forces are as important as destructive ones. The intra- and interspecific creation of altricial and precocial forms, under both natural and unnatural conditions, is demonstrated to be an ongoing process in some fish species. The vulnerability of specialized precocial forms, such as the aurora charr, and the relative resilience of generalized altricial forms, such as the brook charr, will be pointed out. Precocial specialization has been developed to avoid competition in saturated taxocenes in more stable environments whereas altricial generalists are able to cope with environmental extremes in species-poor taxocenes but are less able to withstand competition. In our conservation efforts we should not try to protect the status quo but merely maintain the rate of change at near natural levels—i.e. control human intervention." @default.
