- W2062368931 abstract "Goeden's recent revision of Harris's scoring system for estimating the effectiveness of biological control agents for weeds is compared with Wapshere's scheme based on the effect of agents on weed populations in regions ecoclimatically similar to the weed-infested region. It is concluded that, if carried out in the appropriate successional stage for dense infestations of the weed, the Wapshere method is better at setting priorities between agents than Harris's system. Further improvement in estimating effectiveness of biological control agents for weeds can come only after a suitable method of allowing for the impact of predators, parasites and competitors of the agents in the native range is developed. This and the distinction between effectiveness, an ecological attribute, and virulence to a particular form of the weed, are discussed, as is the inapplicability to effectiveness of theoretical models of plant/herbivore relations and the difficulty of making realistic experimental estimates of effectiveness." @default.
