- W2062817368 abstract "Detailed observation and reporting by a reliable and unbiased observer. It is fundamentally true that the outcome of the most powerful logic can only be flawed in the absence of ultimately reliable data presented in sufficient detail to allow analysis. Absence of detail or failure of precision introduces a degree of randomness which may preclude an appreciation of the underlying mechanisms. Kerr was early interested in the syndrome classified as of atypical facial neuralgias. The bizarre distribution of the areas of reported pain appeared not to correspond to any typical dermatomal distribution and frequently led such patients to be classified as hysterical. Kerr, after extensive observation on the other hand, noted the consistency of the phenomenon and suggested in fact that a central convergence between trigeminal and the upper cervical roots would satisfy the apparent anomaly. Concise and detailed observation is a necessity we all appreciate, but we should also note that failure to report these detai!s preve,,nts those observations from being of value to others. This comment is true for all areas of research, but for the clinical scientist and his dialogue with the non-clinical scientist, they are particularly pertinent. In the end, the work in this area is largely directed at addressing the issues of pain in man. Faulty, tar limited descriptions in a journal article may be more than frustrating because they may lead to a flawed line of reasoning and wasted experiments. I recall a conversation with Kerr after he had reviewed a clinical article on brain stimulation. We both agreed the work was flawed and we argued the philosophy of whether it should be accepted.
