- W2062971569 abstract "OBJECTIVE: To describe applicants for potential uterine transplantation (UT) and compare them to other ART patients. DESIGN: Prospective cohort. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After May 2005, women who inquired were sent a comprehensive IRB approved study application package consisting of consent forms and related documents similar to that required for adoption or surrogacy and specifically asked why adoption or surrogacy might not be an option for them. Candidates for UT were restricted to those with absolute uterine factor infertility (UFI) including congenital absence of uterus (Rokitansky Syndrome); hysterectomy due to obstetrical complications (eg post-partum hemorrhage); hysterectomy for benign causes (eg pelvic inflammatory disease/fibroids/pelvic tuberculosis); early invasive cervical/ovarian malignancies at an early age (<30). UFI causes like polyps/septums that did not require hysterectomy were excluded from consideration. Fertile and infertile patients reported in the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG) were used for comparison. RESULTS: Over 500 potential applicants from all over the world have inquired regarding UT since our first reports in 2001. Analysis of completed applications from candidates is presented. Age ranges of applicants were:24-28 (28%), 28-32 (28%), 34-36 (32%); 81% were Caucasian, 14% Hispanic, 5% African American; 98% were from the US; 78% were married, 62% were nulliparous, and 52% had at least some college education. The most common etiologies for UFI were: hysterectomy for endometriosis-32%; Rokitansky Syndrome-28%; cancers-17% (cervical 12%, uterine 3%, ovarian 2%); postpartum complications-10%, uncontrolled bleeding-4%, uterine prolapse-5%, ovarian cysts-1%, fibroids-2%, Asherman's syndrome-1%. UT applicants were comparable to the NSFG cohort as reported for race, but their education was significantly higher (74% college education) than that in the NSFG cohort (50% college education)(P<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: A significant number of women are interested in uterine transplant in the US. Many more potential patients may also exist worldwide. Potential candidates for UT are similar to other reproductive age women in the US. Presently in the US there are approximately 9.5 million women with absolute UFI (congenital or surgical absence). UT should not be an option for women with alternative methods for having a family. However several candidate applications have compelling argument for being considered for uterus transplantation in rare cases of absolute UFI with no alternatives." @default.
