• W2062992643 abstract "Abstract Zostera marina L., eelgrass, from Izembek Lagoon, Alaska, became isotopically less depleted in 13C over the course of a transect into more anoxic sediments. Plants growing in the more anoxic sediments had been previously documented to have enhanced lacunal development and higher concentrations of CO2 within the lacunae. It was hypothesized that these patterns facilitated recycling and internal use of lacunal CO2 and were responsible for the carbon isotope variation observed. A number of other possible influences on isotopic variability, including relative water motion, biochemical fractionation associated with seasonal variability, isotopic variability in the dissolved inorganic carbon pool, temperature, and light intensity were considered, but not found to be significant. Uncertainties, however, are the proportions of bicarbonate and dissolved CO2 used in photosynthesis. An intertidal eelgrass sample appeared to be influenced isotopically by CO2 exposure from the atmosphere. Of three plant organs sampled, leaves had the highest content of 13C, followed by roots and rhizomes, respectively. Sediment organic δ13C values indicated that eelgrass detritus contributes significantly to sediment organic carbon.
