- W2063034794 abstract "PURPOSE: Proenkephalin Peptide F [107-140] is an enkephalin-containing peptide found predominantly within the adrenal medulla and is co-packaged with epinephrine within adrenal medullary chromaffin granules. Peptide F has been shown to have the classic opioid analgesia effects along with potential immune cell interactions from in vitro studies. The purpose of this investigation was to examine the pattern of Peptide F concentrations in the different bio-compartments of the blood at rest and following sub-maximal cycle exercise to determine if Peptide F interacts in vitro with the white blood cell (WBC) bio-compartment (buffy coat). METHODS: Eight physically active men (n = 8) volunteered for the study. Each performed a submaximal (80–85% VO2max) cycle ergometer exercise test for 30 minutes. The subjects served as their own controls (30 minutes rest instead of exercise). Plasma Peptide F immunoreactivity and white blood cell Peptide F immunoreactivity were examined pre-exercise, mid-exercise and immediately post-, 5 min post-, 15 min post-, 30 min post- and 60 min post-exercise. RESULTS: Following submaximal exercise it was observed that the plasma Peptide F concentration significantly (p<0.05) increased at 5 and 60 minutes post-exercise, compared to pre-exercise concentrations. No significant increases in Peptide F concentrations in the buffy coat fraction were observed during or after exercise. However, we did observe a significant decrease at 30 minutes post-exercise. Peptide F appeared to demonstrate a circadian pattern during the control condition. Furthermore, concentrations of T cells, B cells, NK cells, and total WBCs demonstrated significant responses to this submaximal exercise protocol. CONCLUSIONS: The most striking conclusion of this study is that Peptide F is bound in significant molar concentrations in the white blood cell fraction and that this bio compartment may be one of the tissue targets for binding interactions and remains somewhat constant during exercise stress. Such data support in vitro studies that Peptide F may be involved with immune cell modulation in the blood." @default.
