- W2063248001 abstract "A number of workers have reported that a radiation dose given as a single exposure is more biologically effective than the same dose applied in two successive fractions. Most of the authors attributed the decreased effect of fractionated doses to recovery from damage produced by the first fraction before exposure to the second. On the basis of this concept, the two-fraction method for estimating the rate of recovery has been utilized for rats, mice, hamster, and various kinds of cultured cells (1-3). Etoh (4) recently reported that fish (Oryzias latipes) subjected to a single irradiation with 100 kR of --rays died immediately after the exposure, whereas those given two irradiations with 50 kR at a 3-day interval survived much longer. The results seem to show that recovery from radiation-induced damage occurs in fish also. The purpose of the experiments herein reported was to study the effect of temperature on the rate of recovery from damage produced by different doses of ionizing radiation by the two-fraction method in the fish Oryzias latipes.
