- W2063333417 abstract "Using in‐depth audio‐taped interviews, observations, and discussions and focusing on two sites (one rural and the other urban), this study highlights life experiences that motivated men and women to participate in literacy programs in Zambia. The major findings were that motivation was shaped by reasons that were fear‐driven, personal, and communal and that were related to gender and culture. Further, the study demonstrates that the process of overcoming fears and inhibitive feelings evolved through four stages: dependence, frustration, mutual dependence and independence. The liberating potential of literacy training in nonliterate communities is also demonstrated." @default.
