- W2063461499 abstract "Through repeated abstraction, a concept of a somewhat mechanical, almost completely logical, has become widely accepted in economic theory. The layman, because the concept appears to be an over-simplified and unrealistic version of its real life counterpart, often questions its validity. He tends to think of businessmen as men who are sometimes lucky, sometimes unlucky, usually shrewd, and quite often likable. He does not tend to abstract from real life; he has a vivid impression of the central figure in a capitalistic economy. Though most economists have tried to make the abstraction a true representation of the real life figure, they have failed to give sufficient emphasis to the, person. The abstract concept seems, therefore, but a pallid image of the colorful figure who has played an essential role in the development of capitalism. It is not alleged, however, that the abstraction has not served a useful purpose. Without it, scientific consideration of the various factors related to the operation of capitalism would have been exceed? ingly cumbersome and, perhaps, impossible. The concept of the businessman as a rational, rather mechanistic man has permitted economists to explore and form conclusion about how and why the capitalistic system has taken part in a two hundred year long Industrial Revolution. If, on the other hand, the main effort of economists has been turned to the examination, classification, and implications of the personal characteristics of the thousands of businessmen who have participated in the Industrial Revolution, much of the progress that has been made in the analysis of capitalism would probably have been impossible. Economists have tended to accept an apparently valid set of assump? tions about the businessman. They have used these assumptions in the construction af analytical models, models which are masterpieces of logic. Inquiries about the personalities of businessmen have, for the most part, been left to historians and biographers." @default.
