- W2063485263 abstract "Antibodies to nuclear and cytoplasmic structures are common findings in human sera, especially in patients with presumed autoimmune diseases. Antinuclear antibodies are important diagnostic markers for some rheumatic diseases, whereas antibodies to cytoplasmic structures are often associated with so called organ-specific autoimmune diseases. In 1973 Gabbiani et al. demonstrated that some human sera reacted with cytoplasmic actin-containing microfilaments of smooth muscle tissue (smooth muscle antibodies) and of cultured cells. Later it was found that there are also human antibodies to 2 other cytoplasmic fibrillar structures, microtubules (Kurki et al., 1978a) and intermediate filaments (Kurki et al., 1977). Since then several other types of cytoskeleton antibodies have been described. The finding of these human and other cytoskeleton antibodies (Osborn et al., 1977; Gordon et al., 1978) stimulated research on the function, biochemistry, and pathology of the cytoskeleton. The formation of autoantibodies reacting with the intracellular cytoskeleton of cells may proceed by several mechanisms. Such antibodies may arise as a 'normal ' reaction to tissue destruction, but it is also possible that tolerance against 'self ' is broken by cross-reacting microbial antigens (Fujinami et al., 1983). Interestingly, some membrane proteins may share antigenic determinants with the cytoskeleton" @default.
