It is in this context that this book is quite useful. The first author of this book, Karolyn Crowley, is a nurse and founder of Insight Support Groups, a recovery program for nursing professionals. She has herself been in recovery for 15 years. The second author of book, Carrie Morgan, is a recovery coach for over 14 years. So both authors have first-hand experience with recovery process. The book starts with a foreword and introduction and is divided into ten chapters and five appendices. The first chapter is named, the bottom dropped out. This chapter sets emotional stage for book and presents professional upheaval that comes with substance abuse. A large number of nurses are diagnosed with a substance abuse problem. According to book, more than 300,000 nurses or 10% of all nurses have a substance abuse problem. The chapter identifies three audiences for book: (1) people who know someone suffering from substance abuse, (2) people seeking help due to substance abuse problem, (3) people who have been confronted with evidence of substance abuse. This chapter and other chapters have box items about small accounts of real people suffering from substance abuse. This feature makes book quite reader friendly and interesting. The chapter also discusses three key factors in initiation of substance abuse by health care professionals, namely opportunity, motive, and means. The second chapter provides an overview of addiction and recovery. It defines recovery, discusses classic traps for relapse that include denial, isolation, staying with using friends, changing too much at once, self-sponsorship or working your own program, and resisting help, and describes common defense mechanisms such as denial, compartmentalization, projection, rationalization, minimization, isolation, and justification. Common addiction and recovery program terminology is also presented in chapter. This serves as a useful feature of book and will assist reader comprehend differences between various terms. The third chapter is about getting back to work and discusses issues with early treatment and reentry into job market. Topics such as state programs, employment variables in one's state, treatment and monitoring contracts for licensing, changes in employment protocols, substance abuse disorder and recovery disclosure (who, when, and how much to tell) and job readiness are discussed in this chapter. …" @default.
