- W20636154 abstract "Microalbuminuria has emerged in the last decade as a recognized independent cardiovascular risk factor in addition to being a predictor of diabetic kidney disease (1,2). It has been described to be associated with essential hypertension (3,4), elevated plasma triglycerides, total cholesterol and reduced HDL-cholesterol, endothelial dysfunction (5–7): all features of the metabolic syndrome (11,12). Whether microalbuminuria has a direct pathophysiological link to insulin resistance, or is related to the syndrome by sheer associations with other metabolic abnormalities is largely unknown. We shall present evidence in this chapter that connects microalbuminuria to insulin resistance/hyperinsulinemia in the development of cardiovascular disease. In certain high risk patient groups such as those with diabetes or essential hypertension, the presence of microalbuminuria seems to add to the insulin resistant state to confer a more deleterious cardiovascular profile." @default.
