- W2063633597 abstract "The paucity of data on the response of cortical neurons to taste stimulation raised the question of whether thalamic taste neurons do, in fact, project to cortex. In an electrophysiological study of thalamocortical taste projections in the albino rat and cottontop marmoset, the following results were obtained. It was found that thalamic neurons in the ventromedial nucleus responding to chemical stimulation of the anterior tongue and/or electrical stimulation of the ipsilateral chorda tympani nerve could be activated antidromically from ‘taste cortex’, that is, from that delimited area on the cortical surface from which maximal, primary responses were evoked following electrical stimulation of the chorda tympani nerve. Thus this demonstrated that thalamic taste neurons do project to cortex. Moreover, it was shown that thalamocortical gustatory cells could be activated synaptically from ‘taste cortex’, suggesting the existence of corticothalamic projections to thalamic taste neurons. Finally, it may be concluded that many thalamic taste cells receive bilateral, convergent input from the anterior tongue." @default.
