- W2063666095 abstract "Latexes based on vinyl acetate and alkyl acrylate emulsion copolymers have many interesting, unique, and useful properties. In this paper some of the physico - chemical aspects of vinyl-acrylic latexes, mostly based on our research work, are discussed. Some of the complex nature of surfactant interactions in vinyl-acrylic latexes are reviewed. The saturation adsorption model, relating saturation adsorption to polymer polarity, is used to better understand thermodynamic parameters that control adsorption at a copolymer latex/water interface. Also, the potential application of surfactant adsorption to probe copolymer latex surface is explored. Surfactant interaction involving solubilization of the latex and its effect on polymerization kinetics and film formation in vinyl-acrylics are discussed at length. A convenient titration procedure is described to determine acid distribution in carboxylated vinyl-acrylic latexes. Complications resulting from the hydrolysis of poly(vinyl acetate) are considered. Finally, the effect of vinyl-acrylic surface chemistry on latex properties such as rheology, pigment-later interactions, etc., in some application areas are discussed." @default.
