- W2063695018 abstract "An ultra-high vacuum (UHV) tribometer was used to make friction measurements on two single-crystalline Cu(111) surfaces, both modified by the presence of varying coverages of adsorbed atoms. The adsorbates used, sulfur, chlorine, and iodine, all formed hexagonal overlayers at saturation coverage and exhibited diffraction patterns which were used to calibrate the adsorbate coverages in conjunction with Auger electron spectroscopy (sulfur, chlorine) or temperature-programmed desorption measurements (iodine). All sliding measurements exhibited classic stick-slip behavior. The clean surfaces exhibited high static friction coefficients which were reduced only slightly by the atomic adsorbates even at saturation coverage. These results contradict the commonly held notion that friction is very sensitive to trace levels of surface contamination. Apparently saturated monolayers of adsorbed atoms cannot prevent direct metal-metal contact which then dictates the subsequent sliding behavior of the interface." @default.
