- W2063774677 abstract "Abstract This article gives an account of the first major St. Patrick's Day parade in London, highlighting the way the parade was used by the Irish community to increase the visibility and profile of the Irish in London by creating a positive Irish identity through the articulation of an inclusive experience of Irishness. Such prominent visibility of the Irish represents for many within the Irish community a formal acceptance of the contribution the Irish endow multicultural London, when for many years the Irish have been rendered invisible by being represented as a pariah community. I suggest that such a project is fraught with ambivalence, lying uneasily as it does in between an important politics of recognition and a dangerous reification of culture and ethnicity and the reduction of identities to a fetishized surplus value. Rather than viewing such spectacles as either radically liminal and progressive or co-opted by the “dominant power,” the organisers and sponsors are more seen as a “new social movement,” believing their mission is to pluralize society and provide new models of intercultural interaction. Key Words: visibilityambivalenceparadesmulticulturalisminclusivitystereotypes I would like to thank the Department of Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment for funding my doctoral work and The Institute of Irish Studies at Queen's University Belfast for funding postdoctoral research. I would also like to thank the referees of this article for their insightful comments, as well as Ros Scanlon and the Hammersmith Irish Centre for providing valuable assistance during fieldwork. The Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) was originally passed by the British government in 1974. Specifically designed to counter Irish Republican terrorism in Britain, the act allowed people to be detained without charge for up to seven days and for the Home Secretary to exclude people, including U.K. citizens born in Northern Ireland, from entering Britain without recourse to trial or explanation (see CitationCurtis 1984; CitationHillyard 1993). 4. Slightly broader in geographical remit, “Celticism” can include not only the Irish but also the Cornish-English, Welsh, Scottish (particularly the “Highlanders”), and the French Bretons (CitationChapman 1994). 5.
