- W2063805805 abstract "The statistical theory of brittle failure is used to describe the scale effect in ice. It is shown that the ultimate compressive strength of ice depends upon the distribution of various cracks and hidden and obvious defects in the ice structure. An analytical equation which links the statistical mean ultimate compressive strength of ice with its volume is derived on a statistical basis. A method of selecting parameters to quantify the scale effect is discussed. It is shown that when the volume of ice subjected to uniaxial compression becomes substantially larger than the volumes of the tested samples, the mean ultimate compressive strength of ice asymptotically approaches the strength of the weakest segment. A statistical evaluation of the expected limits of the ultimate compressive strength is also discussed. The paper provides suggestions for standardizing experiments on compressive strength of ice. A representative example shows the application of the analytical results which, if supplemented by appropriate experimental data, can lead to a more rigorous and realistic evaluation of global ice loads and local ice pressures imposed on massive ice-resistant off-shore structures with wide and flat vertical walls." @default.
