- W2063816382 abstract "The Culture of Giving is an ambitious book. It is not just about gifts to charities, although its arguments culminate in examinations of such gifts. Instead, Ilana Ben-Amos defines “giving” as any exchange that involves support and reciprocity, including exchanges within the nuclear family, among kin or neighbors, and between patrons and clients, as well as the voluntary charity of guilds, parishes, and charity associations and the state-mandated charity of parishes under the poor laws. Nor does the foregoing description sufficiently sketch this book's reach. Since it examines “giving,” it examines Marcel Mauss's argument that a culture based on exchange of gifts is incompatible with a market economy. Since it focuses on the period from 1580 to 1740, it contests hypotheses claiming that informal support systems declined during this period, a decline these hypotheses attribute to the Renaissance and the rise of an individualist self; the Reformation and the identification of poverty with sin; the expansion of towns; and the increasing power of the English state, especially its ability to command the English to support the poor. Finally, since this book examines culture, it deals with practice, ritual, and discourse, as well as with the gift. Such a book promises much, and this one fulfills that promise." @default.
