- W2064086543 abstract "Purpose. Several near-infrared (NIR) interactance devices to measure body composition were introduced by Futrex (Gaithersburg, MD). These devices are the FUTREX-5000 (F5), FUTREX-5000A (F5A), and the FUTREX-5000Ai (F5Ai). The study determined the accuracy of these instruments in a cardiac patient population. Methods. Hydrostatic weighing was used as the criterion measure of the accuracy of these instruments. Skinfold and bioelectric impedance assessments were also taken for comparison, using the Durnin and Womersley, and Siri equations to determine body fat percentages. Thirty-two patients with cardiac disease, ages 46 to 81, who were at least 6 weeks post-event were enrolled in the study. After determining investigator reliability for the skinfolds (r = 0.98) and the NIR instruments (r = 0.99), all six assessment techniques were performed on each subject by the same investigator. Results. Although analysis of variance and Duncan post-hoc procedures revealed that F5, F5A, and F5Ai values were not significantly different than the hydrostatic value, correlation analysis showed NIR assessments to be only moderately related to those obtained using hydrostatic measurements, (r = .80). Skinfold values were significantly higher and bioelectrical impedance values were significantly lower than the criterion measure. The strength of the correlations were substantially lower in females. Conclusion. The three NIR instruments yielded reliable but not acceptably valid body composition measurements in cardiac patients." @default.
