- W2064318420 abstract "THE MITRAL ANNULUS (MA) is the nonplanar, saddle-shaped fibrous ring around the valvular orifice. Along with the posterior left atrial wall, valve leaflets, chordae tendineae cordis, papillary muscles, and left ventricle (LV), it is an integral component of the mitral valve (MV) apparatus. 1 Perloff J.K. Int J Cardiol. 2013; 163: 242-248 Abstract Full Text Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (29) Google Scholar Three-dimensional (3D) transesophageal echocardiography has furthered understanding of the geometry of the MA. Appreciation of the dynamic saddle shape of the MA has led to improvements in MV repair techniques and annuloplasty ring designs that impart fewer geometric distortions to MA architecture. With repair becoming the preferred intervention for MV disorders, selection of the appropriate annuloplasty prosthesis for repair is a vital clinical decision. Echocardiographic knowledge of the normal MA structure and function is crucial for intraoperative echocardiographic decision making. In this review article, the anatomic structure, function, and echocardiographic evaluation of the MA are described with reference to intraoperative decision making." @default.
