- W2064352523 abstract "Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring, radioactive gas. Humans are primarily exposed to this health hazard by breathing indoor air containing radon, which enters man-made structures primarily by leakage of soil gas through building foundations (Field, 1999). Numerous public health agencies consider residential radon exposure to be the second leading cause of lung cancer after cigarette smoking (U.S. EPA, 2003; Field, 1999), resulting in an estimated 21,000 deaths annually in the United States (U.S. EPA, 2003). The U.S. EPA (1993) has established 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L) of radon as the federal action level for indoor air, a level of exposure that is estimated to pose a lifetime risk of lung cancer death to the general population of 2.3 × 10−3 (U.S. EPA, 2003). Nearly one of every 15 homes in the United States has elevated average annual concentration of indoor radon, and Iowa, where this pilot study was performed, was found to have a higher percentage of homes above the 4 pCi/L than any other state (U.S. EPA, 1993). Data-based predictions by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) suggest that Iowa includes a large number of counties with an estimated 40 percent of homes with long-term living-area concentrations above the action level (LBNL, 2004). The greatest risk is posed to residents living in the estimated 0.1 percent of U.S. homes (50,000 to 100,000) with indoor living-area concentrations of radon exceeding 20 pCi/L (LBNL, 2004), corresponding to a lifetime risk of lung cancer death to the general population of 1.1 × 10−1 (11 percent; U.S. EPA, 2003).Despite the health threat posed by radon, characterization of the geographic distribution of residential radon concentration is handicapped for several reasons: (1) many homes have never been tested because of ambivalence on the part of owners or disincentives to …" @default.
