- W2064377079 abstract "Objective: To describe differences in demographic characteristics of patients treated in the Model Spinal Cord Injury System (MSCIS) facilities and Medicare Fee-for-Service Beneficiaries treated in inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRF), and to increase awareness of the existence of the Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility-Patient Assessment Instrument (IRF-PAI) database and its potential uses. Design: Secondary data analysis. Setting: IRFs treating Medicare beneficiaries for IRF-PAI database and MSCIS facilities for the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center (NSCISC) database. Participants: Patients with new traumatic SCIs admitted to MSCIS facilities and Medicare beneficiaries admitted to IRFs. Interventions: None. Main Outcome Measures: Demographic characteristics of patients in both databases. Results: This study found differences in the characteristics of the Medicare beneficiaries treated in IRFs and patients treated in MSCIS facilities. Medicare beneficiaries were older—mean ± SD age 77.1 ±7.4 versus 38.1±16.7 years old, more likely to be women (52.0% vs. 22.5%), more likely to be married (50.9% vs 37.0%), and more likely to be white (86.5% vs 61.5%). The most common injury level was incomplete quadriplegia in both groups (21.5% and 32.4%). The mean ± SD time from injury to rehabilitation admission was shorter for Medicare patients: 14.7±26.8 days for Medicare and 19.6±22.4 days for NSCISC. Mean ± SD rehabilitation length of stay was shorter for Medicare patients: 19.3±13.1 days for Medicare and 44.8±36.7 days for NSCISC. There were more patients from the Midwest area represented in the IRF-PAI database compared with the NSCISC. Conclusions: The IRF-PAI database may be a useful source for examining subgroups of patients with traumatic SCI (65y and older, specific geographic regions) who may be underrepresented in the NSCISC database. It may also be a useful source of information for health policy makers about the needs of patients who need rehabilitation, especially given the increasing average age of the US population. We hope that this study will increase awareness of the existence of the IRF-PAI database for potential research use and help contribute to the understanding of the characteristics of patients with SCI." @default.
