- W2064716921 abstract "Abstract Structure-activity relationships of chlorophenols were studied to examine the role of 2,6-dichlorophenol (2,6-DCP) as a sex pheromone in the American dog tick, Dermacentor variabilis (Say). With regard to fed males, 2,6-DCP was predictably attractive and acted dually as an attachment stimulant by prompting a ‘feeding’ posture behavior. The action of 2,6-DCP could be mimicked by another dichlorinated phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, but not by the monochlorinated phenols 4-chlorophenol and 2-chlorophenol. Both 2,6-DCP and 2,4-dichlorophenol were attractive to fed females and fed nymphs (no significant difference compared to attraction in males; P>0.05). Because neither females nor nymphs display clustering behavior on hosts, only attraction to 2,6-DCP by males has functional value (= sex pheromone). We conclude that receptors for detection of 2,6-DCP are activated as nymphs in preparation for adulthood, and that recognition of 2,6-DCP is based on the number, rather than position, of chlorine atoms present." @default.
