- W2064850581 abstract "The encephalomyocarditis virus (EMC) virus-specific polypeptides synthesised in response to endogenous or added EMC virus RNA in cell-free systems from EMC virus-infected L-cells have been analysed by electrophoresis on sodium dodecylsulphate-polyacrylamide gels in comparison with those formed by synthesis and cleavage [1–4] in intact infected cells. The largest (250000 molecular weight) of the series of polypeptides formed in response to EMC virus RNA in the cell-free system was of a size sufficient for it to be the product of translation of the entire EMC virus RNA genome (2.7 × 106 molecular weight). Of the lower-molecular-weight polypeptides formed in these systems the majority appeared to be the product of premature termination of translation of the large EMC virus RNA message [5,6]. Others, however, corresponded in apparent molecular weight to authentic EMC virus-specific polypeptides and their sequential appearance in the cell-free system was in accord with their formation by cleavage of the nascent EMC virus-specific polyprotein [3] as in the intact infected cell. Thus premature termination predominates in these cell-free systems, but a significant number of the added EMC virus RNA molecules are completely translated to give rise either to the uncleaved 250000 molecular weight polyprotein or to polypeptides corresponding to the primary gene products A, F and C described by Butterworth and Rueckert [3]. The major polypeptide (presumptive primary gene product A) synthesised in response to EMC virus RNA in cell-free systems from cells 4-h post-infection is significantly smaller (105000 molecular weight) than the 130000 molecular weight product predominant in cell-free systems from uninfected cells or from cells 2-h post-infection. It seems, therefore, that during infection there is an increase in the activity of the enzyme(s) responsible for the processing or cleavage of the nascent EMC virus-specific polypeptide chain." @default.
