- W2064920462 abstract "Samples of stream water, fine-grained sediment and coated pebbles were collected at twenty sites located at varying distances from two small sulfide deposits in the central Virginia Piedmont, U.S.A. Mineralization, which is mostly subsurface, consists of pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite and chalcopyrite. The area is rural, forested, and is essentially undisturbed by mining so that natural geochemical trends should be intact. Mineralization could be detected in all three sample types, but trends are subtle, resulting in considerable overlap between samples collected near mineralization and those not associated with mineralized zones. Based on calculated t -values, the most consistent trends are for Cu in the stream water and Fe in the coatings, both of which tend to be higher near mineralization. A sequential selective extraction procedure was used to determine the partitioning of Cu, Zn, Mn and Fe among phases comprising coating samples. Only slight differences in partitioning with proximity to the sulfide deposits could be discerned, too small to be useful in exploration; however, by expressing metal concentrations resulting from certain of these extractions, as ratios, contrast can be increased. In particular, hydrogen peroxide Zn/Mn) and hydroxylamine hydrochloride (Zn/Mn, Cu/Mn and Cu/Fe) produce greater useful contrasts, as defined by calculated t -values, than those which result from total dissolution of coatings, analysis of stream water, or fine-grained sediment." @default.
