- W2065331300 abstract "Abstract Melts prepared from lithium carbonate and talc (3 MgO·4 SiO 2 ·H 2 O) are effective catalysts for the oxidative dimerization of methane to ethane, with the subsequent conversion of ethane to ethylene (C 2 compounds). The reaction was studied in an alumina crucible which contained either alumina or talc rings to disperse the reactant gases in the molten phase. With 20 g of Li 2 CO 3 in a reactor containing alumina rings at 850°C and a methane-to-oxygen ratio of ca. 2 a conversion of 18% and a C 2 selectivity of 36% were observed at steady state. The addition of up to 15% by wt. of MgO caused a small increase both in the methane conversion and the C 2 selectivity. When the reaction was carried out in the presence of the talc rings, part of the talc entered the Li 2 CO 3 , and the conversion and selectivity increased to 43% and 40%, respectively. The positive results observed with talc are believed to result from the combined effects of the MgO, SiO 2 and perhaps iron impurities, as well as the pitted talc rings. Initially the nominally pure, molten Li 2 CO 3 was essentially inactive for the production of C 2 's, but as part of the carbonate decomposed and the talc entered the melt, an active oxide phase was formed. Carbon dioxide reversibly poisons the Li 2 CO 3 /talc system. Under normal operating conditions methane and other hydrocarbons react with carbon dioxide to form hydrogen and carbon monoxide. These reactions could be responsible for a considerable decrease in C 2 selectivity. Lithium carbonate and sodium carbonate form a eutectic, but the catalytic properties of this melt with talc are inferior to those obtained with only lithium carbonate and talc." @default.
