- W2065352536 abstract "Publisher Summary Photoproteins are self-contained bioluminescent systems in which all of the organic components required for the generation of light are bound together, and they behave as a single macromolecule (in contrast to conventional bioluminescent systems from which discrete luciferins and luciferases can be isolated). This chapter discusses photoproteins, a group of closely related substances that are responsible for the bioluminescence of a variety of marine organisms (mostly coelenterates). Because of their large molecular size, photoproteins are probably the most difficult of the Ca 2+ indicators to introduce into cells; for the same reason, once photoproteins are introduced into a cellular compartment, they do not leak out or move to other intracellular compartments. Photoproteins are difficult enough to work with, and their use should not be undertaken casually. However, for certain applications, they clearly are the most satisfactory Ca 2+ indicators available at present." @default.
