- W2065515219 abstract "Abstract Seven-day-old sunflower seedlings ( Helianthus annuus L., var. Mammoth Russian) were placed in solutions deficient in various essential elements for a 3-day period, X-irradiated with 1 kR, and then immediately transferred to a complete nutrient solution for a 36-day growth period. Plant measurements and visual radiation effects were used to assess radiation sensitivity. Plants subjected to a 3-day withholding of potassium, calcium, all nutrients or all macronutrients exhibited a marked increased resistance to damage by radiation when compared to plants irradiated without any withholding prior to irradiation. Withholding nitrogen, phosphorus and iron had only a slight protective effect while withholding sulfur and magnesium showed no observable protective effect. It is concluded that the brief exclusion of certain elements reduces growth rate and cellular activity quite promptly and thus renders young tissues more radioresistant while the withholding of other elements fails to do so. These responses serve to demonstrate the relative rapidity of the onset of physiological effects brought about by the absence of a specific nutrient element." @default.
