- W206557651 abstract "Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) has a long established record in the isotopic analysis of Fe for stable isotope studies. There are, however, a number of disadvantages to the conventional method of analysis. These include the relatively large amount of sample used (e.g. 0.5–1 mL of RBC) and the time required for sample preparation. We present an adapted method for TIMS analysis utilizing micro-column anion exchange chemistry and modified loading techniques considered superior to the conventional method of analysis. The new method allows for a reduction in the sample size to < 50 μl and improves sample preparation times to < 3 hours. RBC samples enriched in 57Fe and 58Fe where analyzed for isotopic composition using both the old and new methods. Isotopic ratios from the new method did not differ from the old, nor did the calculated iron absorption values. External RSD of <0.1% for both the 57Fe/56Fe and 58Fe/56Fe ratios indicates that the reduction in sample size does not affect reproducibility. Results from analysis of natural abundance iron from RBC indicate the new method also reduces analytical fractionation. These improvements provide TIMS with the ability to precisely measure Fe isotopic composition from finger stick sized blood samples.
