• W2065578622 abstract "Abstract The columnar structure and texture of obliquely deposited iron films prepared at various pressures were investigated. The pressure ranged from 2 x 10 -5 to 8 x 10 -3 Torr. The films were evaporated at an angle of incidence of 65°, a substrate temperature of 200°C and an evaporation rate of 5 x 10 2 A min -1 . The following results were obtained: (i) the angle of inclination of the columnar grains decreases slowly with increasing pressure until a pressure of 10 -3 Torr is reached when the decrease becomes rapid; (ii) the degree of bundling of the columnar grains is a maximum at a pressure of about 1 x 10 -3 Torr; (iii) the texture changes from the [100] two-degree orientation to the [111] two-degree orientation and finally to the [111] one-degree orientation as the pressure increases; (iv) the degree of orientation of the texture has a maximum at a pressure of about 3 x 10 -3 Torr. On the basis of these results it is concluded that the movement of adatoms as a result of their momenta determines the character of the columnar structure and texture over the whole range of pressure and that the scattering effect of residual gases on the vapour atoms becomes appreciable above 1 x 10 -3 Torr." @default.
