- W2065666593 abstract "The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) currently requires collegiate wrestling teams to complete a Lowest Allowable Weight certification process. Body composition is determined and wrestlers are not allowed to drop below five percent body fat. The two current acceptable methods are hydrostatic weighing and skin-fold (SF) assessment using the three-site modified Lohman equation. More recently, the use of bio-electrical impedance analysis (BIA) has become very popular. However, this method has not become accepted by the NCAA. PURPOSE: To compare the accepted NCAA methods of body composition determination to the Tanita (TBF 305) (leg to leg (BIA) instrument. METHODS: Thirty-four male collegiate wrestlers (age: 20 ± 2y; height: 172 ± 6cm; body mass: 73.7 ± 9.4kg) completed the one week assessment period. Subjects were initially screened for hydration status using a urine specific gravity refractometer (< 1.020). Four methods of body composition assessment were utilized: 1) the NCAA mandated three-site SF assessment (modified Lohman equation), 2) hydrostatic weighing with residual lung volume (RLV) determined by nitrogen washout (UWW-NW), 3) hydrostatic weighing with RLV prediction based on forced vital capacity (UWW-FVC) and 4) use of a BIA instrument as indicated per manufacturer's instructions. RESULTS: Determination of % fat by BIA (12.1 ± 3.3%) was significantly higher (p < .05) vs SF (10.8 ± 2.7%), UWW-FVC (10.5 ± 3.3%) and UWW-NW (10.7 ± 3.0%, p < .01). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that the Tanita (TBF 305)leg to leg BIA analysis in collegiate wrestlers overestimates percent body fat as compared to the standard accepted methods." @default.
