- W2065754405 abstract "New estimates are given of dose-response parameters for chromatid aberrations induced in root-meristem cells of the broad bean, Vicia faba, by X-ray doses in the range 20–100 R. In terms of the power-law model, yield per cell induced by dose D = kDn, the following values of the dose exponent n were derived for the different aberrations listed. Gaps (achromatic lesions) 1.07 ± 0.08 Real chromatid discontinuities 1.71 ± 0.09 Isochromatid discontinuities 1.48 ± 0.04 Chromatid interchanges 2.00 ± 0.03 Triradials 2.92 ± 0.21 Real chromatid discontinuities are relatively rare after all doses, being only about 2.5 times more frequent than sister non-unions of isochromatid discontinuities. It is suggested that the general belief that chromatid breakage is linearly related to X-ray dose has been based on scores that were large over-estimates, due to the inclusion of gaps. The following points relating to these data are discussed. 1. The difficulty in assuming that chromatid discontinuities (increasing proportionately to dose1.7) are the survivors of a much larger number of primary breaks increasing proportionately only to dose1.0. 2. The difficulty in assuming that the primary events in chromatid exchange development are chromatid breaks. 3. The agreement of the data with the exchange hypothesis for chromatid aberrations19, and the question of the repair of chromosome damage." @default.
